Away by Amy Bloom

when it started i was whisked away on the jouney of Lillian the Jewish woman who had already seen much trajedy as the book began.  Lillian goes to America after a purge against the jews in her russian home town where her father and mother were killed.  She Dropped her daughter aged just 3 out of the window and told her to hide under the chickens in the chicken coop.  Her own death onlyinteruppted by fate, but the near miss left it’s scar.

Not able to find her daughter and on information given to her by an aunt that Sophie her dauhter was dead, she travells to America. She first becoms a seamstress in a jewish theatre company.

She becomes the faux mistress of the leading man at the theatre named Meyer.  Meyers father owned the theatre and knew Meyer was gay. Lillian then becomes the true mistres to Meyers father until Freida – her cousin from Russia comes to visit. She tells Lillian that her daughter is indeed alivel, that the neighbours rescued her thnking that Lillian had been killed along with the rest of her family.

Lillian then Tries to get back to Russia. Her plan to go from New York to Canada to alaska up the Yukon and eventually to Siberia.

She meets Gumdrop the prostitute, she gets put in prison, she walks along the telegraph route in winter, she rescues three children, she falls in love.

It was a good book – read it!

things been going quite well

bought a mirror for £3 at a boot sale – v. nice – it’s now in my hall.  this was as we werw trying to look for the mcfucks  as they got the ump that we didn’t ring them last week when it was pissing down – dh mentioned that it was a fair assumption – but no they went anyway.  so we went over around 10l30 and the mcfucks had fucked off already.  i am in half a mind to ust fucking leave them to come to us and ask them if they have incoming calls only!

we went to cimena with ex to watch drag me to hell – it did eactly what it was supposed to in a classic horror way – it was still shit -even though i nearly wet myself. – good time had by all

went on a bike ride today had a spot of lunch bought some fruit – i did quite well i thought. i navigated roads and even took my hands of the handlebar to signal at one point.  i only got off to go up the hill on the way there and i managed all the way home

not bad for a gilr who couldn’t ride a bike at 12 years old – quite proud of myself.

then went to see blood brothers with ez in town – it was bloody brilliant. – like bloody brilliant.

the stage is really small – we ere spoiled in oldham – we had a glorious theatre – even the pantomimes were lavish in comparison.

i love the naffness of panto – and we used to go quite often – but this town is pants – two theatres – TWO! and both so small its untrue.

so i thought that maybe its becuase its so small – ez and i went to see Fame – we walked out halfway through – we really couldn;t stand it anymore.

so its the size the atmosphere – but i thought i would try again – not expecting much – and i was blown awya. blwon a fucking way/

Kitchen paraphinalia

it was like a quest from never ending story only i wasn’t saving the world, it was rather more important than that old thing.  I Found the perfect pasta jars.  I have scoured blogs and online shops as well as high street ones.

a lot were just try hard. i wanted see through jars. i want to see what pasta i have left and what i have used. but i didn’t want a schmantsy locking mechanism, opaque glass, the word ‘pasta’ on anywhere.  and today i hit the holy grail – and the holy grail had 20% off.

It doesn’t stop there. i wanted an atop the stove kettle.  choice between tin thing from camping shop and fake enamel try hard.

in the same shop as the pasta jars, we found holy grail number too and it to had 20% off.

DH then had to tell the girl that she took 20p off and that actually the total should be a lot lower ( ne named the exact amount) i was much impressed at his assertiveness.

yay.

Half of a Yellow sun

was a brilliant read. I knew nothing about the Nigerian civil war and Biafra. Now i know something. Simple characters leading me through their love, riches, horror and grief.

The depths that man can go to.
